Sproutit Mentioned in the Financial Times

Posted by charles at February 25, 2006

We got a nice mention by Paul Taylor in the Financial Times today. (As did our friends at iotum). Woo-hoo!

Mailroom from Sproutit (www.sproutit.com) aims to deliver similar productivity gains to small businesses deluged with e-mail. The web-based e-mail management software package automatically sorts and routes incoming e-mail and also suggests responses that are then reviewed by a human being.

Sproutit’s mailroom automatically tracks all the correspondence between a business and a customer, delivering one element of big business customer relationship management to small companies.

Paul Gillin's SMB picks

Posted by chris at February 11, 2006

By Paul Gillin on Thursday Feb 9.

Given all the lip service being given to the small/medium business market, I was surprised there weren’t more products targeting those users. Nevertheless, there were three that caught my eye.

DEMOgods and personal glory, by Shel Israel

DemoGods and Personal Glory

I cannot report on the DemoGod Awards without basking in a bit of personal glory. I’ll get that part out of the way first, then resume our regularly scheduled posting. I coached three companies for their Demo presentations. They are Riya, the photo search engine Krugle, the open source search engine and iodum, the Web 2.0 personal call management system. All three won DemoGod Awards. I am very grateful to have worked with such talented teams and such promising new technology.

Demo 2006 - Blogging Demo 2006

Posted by charles at February 08, 2006

“What Counts” blog early reactions to Mailroom:

Strong, clean interface. Tackling a critically important role, this product might have legs. Six minutes was too short a period of time to properly evaluate. With my clear interests in email I plan to spend much more time learning about this product. DEMO says there are no competitors, but this isn’t right by a long shot. There are a bunch of folks doing this and have been doing it for a while. (from Demo 2006 – Blogging Demo 2006)

Jeff Clavier's Software Only: DEMO 2006: Day Two - Morning

Posted by charles at February 08, 2006

Jeff Clavier got the first post out about our DEMO today. You can read it at:

Sprout Systems: announces MailRoom, a solution for small businesses to manage, prioritize and in some cases automatically reply, to the email they are receiving (stats mentioned is that SMBs spend up to 50% of their time answering). It is based on a Web-based UI that provides ready-made forms, email answers and workflows to speed up email management. This sounds interesting, but I am concerned about the scalability of the demo’ed solution to hundreds of emails, and thousands of contacts. DEMO 2006 Preview on ZD Net

Posted by charles at February 07, 2006

Sprout Systems is introducing an email management system for small businesses, with 10 or fewer employees. Spoutit Mailroom is a hosted service starting at $19 per month. The software sorts and prioritizes correspondence, suggests responses, tracks threads, and hotlists critical emails. The 10 person company is scattered around the US and in Prague. Three of the top executives in the startup moved from Southern California to Prague because the cost of living is 40 percent less. Beer is only 75 cents in Prague, Charles Jolly, one of the 27-year-old cofounders told me.

Sprout Overview

Posted by charles at February 05, 2006

What are we doing?

There are 20 million businesses with 10 or fewer employees in the United States alone. Our mission is to build a suite of web hosted business applications uniquely designed for these very small businesses.

Our first product, called Mailroom, will help small businesses, small groups, and even bloggers handle the large amount of email they receive from their websites. Companies we surveyed spent on average 3-4 hours per day answering email from their public email addresses alone (support@, sales@, etc). Our service can cut the time these businesses spend on email significantly and improve the quality of their replies.

Here is how it works: A company signs up and points their current email address at Mailroom. Then Mailroom starts working to:

  • Sort correspondence into appropriate mailboxes (sales, customer support, etc.)
  • Prioritize mail according to urgency
  • Suggest responses according to previous replies
  • Track and thread previous dialogue in a conversation
  • Display customer information
  • Hotlist critical emails

With these features, clients save time and are able to send informed responses. Mailroom’s easy to use format makes it possible for others to fill in anytime.

What makes us different?

Most business software is made for large companies. But, unlike large companies, small businesses do not have an IT department or huge budget and long roll out times for projects. Most business software is simply unavailable to small businesses, even when it’s hosted.

We are creating business software with the polish and automation of consumer software; we charge using simple, monthly plans with no long term commitments and no one will ever talk to a salesman. There is nothing to install and you can try out our software with less than 15 minutes of setup. In short, everything about our company, from our products to our business model is designed to deliver the same powerful business applications that drive big companies, built for the unique needs of small business.

Who are we?

Sproutit.com was founded in March by Charles Jolley, Chris Bauman, and Peter Gohman. They were later joined by Topher Dufour who handles our brand and graphic design. Scott Barron, one of the core developers on the Ruby on Rails team, and Shanti Braford serve as our developers. Andrew vonderLuft of AVLUX Solutions designs our web hosting solutions. Sally Stewart, former USA Today reporter, owner of SA Stewart Communications and author of the book Media Training 101, is helping us with publicity. Charles, Chris, Peter, and Topher all met at Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego.

Charles, Chris and Peter moved to Prague for a year in September to launch Sproutit.com to save 40% on startup costs while living the entrepreneurial dream.

You can learn more about us on the About Us page.

What do we want?

Small business is great because they are able to stay connected with their customers on a personal level. We want that to remain the unique touch that only small businesses can offer. Being small, however, should not limit your ability to remain connected with your customers. You should have every ability to offer top notch support and products to your current and every-increasing customer base.
